Get Carey Mulligan’s hair and makeup from The Great Gatsby

We’re totally loving the short flapper ‘do that Carey Mulligan rocks in Baz Luhrmann’s brash and colorful interpretation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.

And — lucky for us — the look is actually pretty simple to replicate.

“The Gatsby look brings back the era of flappers and the introduction of women going short with their hair,” Fernando Salas, celebrity stylist and creator of White Sands Hair Care, told SheKnows.

Not sure how to ask for the cut at the salon? Salas makes it simple.

“This cut is a classic shorter A-line bob. The lower nape area is cut with graduation, while the sides are cut with zero graduation,” he said. “A side fringe creates the silhouette and frames the face.”

Add accessories and then finish the style by cutting “interior longer-length layers with the tips of the shears to softly chip into each section for added movement. This technique is also done in the fringe area for softness.”

At-home styling

You know how the style always looks better in the salon than it does at home? Salas says that doesn’t have to be the case here.

“To style at home, it is vital to create a silk-like base to copy when her bob is straight,” he said.

First, shampoo and condition the hair with a salon-quality shampoo and conditioner, like White Sands’ Orchid Bliss.

“With this, shampooing can help cure split ends, as the line’s orchid extract instantly restores the ‘cement’ between the cuticle cells to strengthen hair and reinforce the cell membrane, creating a restructuring and smoothing effect with high shine,” he said.

Next, spray White Sands’ The Fix to add additional shine and reduce blow-drying time.

“Place your blow-dryer on a medium heat setting and use a mini round brush to blow the hair straight,” he advised. “Opt for a cupping technique by rotating your wrist to style the soft fringe, while also bringing out any layers around the face.

Finish with a flexible-hold hairspray, like White Sands Infinity, and add any decorative headbands for extra Gatsby glamour.

Top off your Daisy-esque look with sexy makeup, courtesy of makeup pro Mari Shten.

Spoiler alert: This look is all about focusing on the deep, sexy eye makeup.

“Apply matte light-brown color all over the lid and along lower lashes,” she told us. “Add deeper brown shadow in the crease. Black eyeliner and thick lashes are a must.”

Brows should be filled and groomed into an oval shape. Then, finish off the look with blush and lipstick.

“Blend pink blush on the apple of the cheeks,” Shten told SheKnows. “Use lipstick color that’s close to your natural color but in a deeper shade. You also can use lip liner to add more definition to your lips.”
